Whitewater Rafting details & discussion

If you are coming along on our whitewater adventure please read this!

Details:
- We will be departing at 7:00am Saturday morning, sharp! Don't be late or you will be left behind. Seriously.
- Departing from Paul & Shelly Orzels house. Look for an email soon with the address.
- Expect a 4 hour car ride including one stop along the way for gas and a stretch. You can also purchase some food for yourself if you wish during this stop. We will look for a gas station and some fast food. Bring cash if you want to buy food. Or have breakfast at home ahead of time. Or pack something to have in the car.
- We will be arriving into Ohio Pyle, PA by 11:00am. Our trip begins at 11:30am. So wear the cloths that morning you will want to have on while on (or in) the river that afternoon. Avoid cotton if at all possible. Nylon, Polyester and other quick drying fabrics are recommended. Have on an old pair of tennis shoes, or sandals or water shoes for the boat. They will get soaked. So also bring a change of dry cloths to wear at camp that evening. A life vest and helmet will be provided for safety on the river.
- During our 1st day trip along the middle Yough we will make a stop to have lunch on the riverbank. We are responsible for bringing our own lunch this day. The Crew will be paying for it.
- After we get off the river you can change into dry cloths. We will gather some firewood and head to our campsite. There we will pitch tents, make a fire and cook dinner together.
- Sunday morning we will have breakfast at camp and then break camp and pack up. We need to be back at the river by 11:00am for our second day, class 3 and 4 whitewater down the lower Yough. We will again have lunch on the riverbank that afternoon, but this time it is provided by Wilderness Voyageurs. Expect cold-cuts, chips, fruit and pop.
- Once we are off the river we can all change into dry cloths and begin the trek home. We should be on the road around 3 - 4pm. We will make one stop along the way home for gas, a stretch and food if you wish to eat. Please bring some cash for dinner. We will look for something casual and easy for dinner. Subway, fast food, etc...

Things you all need to decide together:
1) What do you want to have for lunch on Saturday? We will be bringing a cooler in one of our canoes that day to carry the food.
2) What do you want to have for dinner at camp on Saturday? We will have a fire to cook on, a small gas grill and an electric hook-up available to us.
3) What do you want to have for breakfast on Sunday? Think 'quick and easy'.
4) Who from the crew will go out to make the food purchases for this trip? Who will prep all of the food so it is bagged and ready to go by Saturday morning when we depart?

Other things to be aware of:
1) Wet suits are available to rent each day for $10 per day. They will help to keep you warm if you wish to rent one.
2) Each person must fill out a Waiver. I will email a copy to all of you so you can have it filled out and ready when we arrive. This will save time.
3) We will have a cooler in our van to keep food, drinks, etc.. cold through the weekend.
4) If you wear eyeglasses please have a sports band on to avoid loosing them. Whitewater can be very rough. Contacts would be a better option if you have them.
5) Ohio Pyle is a small town with some cool shops. You may want to bring a bit of spending cash along for anything from a cool T-shirt to ice cream.
6) Our campground is only about a 15 minute ride from Wilderness Voyageurs.

  1. Mrs. Orzel will be bringing pie irons to make herself hobo pies on Saturday night. The crew members who are going are invited to share in the hobo pie goodness. I have apple and cherry pie filling, but the crew could decide on bringing something else if they are so inclined. Either way, I've got a hankerin' for some hobo pies!

  2. We also have s'mores stuff and a boatload of hot chocolate. We'll be making our menu at Tuesdays meeting and shopping just before the trip. Be sure to read above to see which meals are provided and which ones are brown bag.
